It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Evgeny (Zhenya) Belyakov, a passionate human rights advocate, CEU alumnus, and dedicated member of the CEU Institute for Democracy. Zhenya passed away unexpectedly in July 2025, leaving behind a legacy of courage, intellect, and unwavering commitment to justice.
His sudden loss has deeply impacted the Central European University (CEU) community and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

What Happened
Zhenya joined the CEU Institute for Democracy as a staff member on April 10, 2025, where he was warmly welcomed by colleagues from across the university. Sadly, just a few months into this promising new chapter of his career, he passed away.
His loss is mourned not only by CEU but by the many people and communities he stood for and supported throughout his life.
Who Was Evgeny (Zhenya) Belyakov?
Zhenya was a devoted human rights advocate, political thinker, and activist. He studied at Central European University from 2008 to 2012, earning a Master’s degree in the Comparative History of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe, with a specialization in Jewish Studies.
His thesis, titled “Dissatisfaction and Juda Emotional Problems in Soviet–US Détente (1968–1975),” reflected his keen interest in the intersections of politics, identity, and justice.
Throughout his life, Zhenya worked relentlessly to fight for human rights, particularly in his native Russia, Hungary, and beyond. He was known for his sharp intellect, strong moral compass, and uncompromising belief in justice and equality.
Career and Contributions
Zhenya’s academic and professional journey was rooted in a passion for truth, political accountability, and the protection of marginalized communities.
After graduating from CEU, he became a well-respected voice in the international human rights community. His advocacy work spanned across political movements, grassroots organizing, and scholarly debate.
