No Survivors Detected During Aerial Survey

According to Russia’s civil defense and fire safety center, a Mi-8 helicopter crew flying over the crash site reported no signs of life.

“The plane caught fire upon impact, and no survivors were spotted during the aerial inspection,” the agency told TASS, Russia’s state news outlet.

Visuals showed the burning fuselage located deep in a forest, confirming that the aircraft had crashed with immense force.

Plane Lost Contact After Failed Landing Attempt

The plane, operated by Angara Airlines, a Siberia-based regional carrier, lost contact with air traffic control around 1 p.m. local time (4 a.m. GMT). The aircraft was performing flight Khabarovsk–Blagoveshchensk–Tynda.

Reports indicate the aircraft initiated a go-around procedure during its landing approach to Tynda Airport. Communication was lost shortly afterward.

Conflicting Passenger Numbers Reported

There are slight discrepancies in the number of people on board:

  • Regional Governor Vasily Orlov stated that 43 passengers were on the flight, including five children and six crew members.
  • However, the Russian Emergencies Ministry estimated the total number to be approximately 40.

Despite the differing figures, all reports agree that no survivors have been found, and emergency personnel are actively involved in recovery efforts.

Aircraft Wreckage Located by Rescue Helicopter

Earlier in the day, Reuters reported that the burning fuselage was discovered by a rescue helicopter dispatched to locate the missing aircraft. The crash site was found in a densely wooded area, making ground rescue and recovery operations challenging.

Conclusion: A National Tragedy with Ongoing Investigations

The crash of the Angara Airlines flight has shocked the region and the world, especially as it involved children and multiple crew members. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, though initial reports suggest that a failed landing and possible mechanical or procedural errors played a role.

Search and recovery operations are ongoing, and authorities have pledged a full investigation to determine the exact cause. As Russia mourns this devastating loss, global leaders, including India’s PM Narendra Modi, have extended their condolences.

Our deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragic incident.
